A Farm???

Although this blog and the products we sell go under what we call our house 'Four Chooks Farm', it is not a farm. We wish it was! We are only on 512sq meters! 8kms from the city! Right in the suburbs. From the road you would have no clue what our backyard is like! It's just house after house.

But I think it's what we have done with that space, what we grow, what we cook, who lives here and how much time we spend outside that makes it farm like!

We have a wood fire inside and a wood oven outside so we have a wood shed, and quite often wood waiting to be chopped, stacked around the place.

We have a garden shed full of tools, gardening equipment, chicken food and straw, that always smells of soil and grass clippings!

We have a chicken coop and run, and a compost heap, that my husband built from recycled materials.

We have 6 chickens now (we started with 4!) named- Foghorn leghorn, Henny penny, Princess, Bulla bulla lightning McQueen, Edna and Doris! (Can you tell which ones the children named?). They love collecting the eggs each day - especially when you can tell they are double yolkers! They're huge!!!

We have a dog. Who loves all your attention!

We have a paved area, a big lawn, and kids play equipment. And a hills hoist!

The hose is wound up on the side of the house, with various attachments scattered nearby.

We have a big verandah out the back, great for long lazy afternoon lunches.

There are always gumboots at the back door.

I bake numerous times during the week so there is always something good to eat with a cup of tea!

I cook from scratch every night. The kitchen is really the heart of our home as someone is always in there!

We grow as many fruits and vegetables as we possibly can. Always trying to squeeze yet another plant in (last week it was an eggplant).

We look after our home, garden and animals as a family.

I'm not trying to brag. And you may wonder how do they fit it all in! But I wanted to tell you what's possible to do in your backyard. It's taken us 6 years to do all this. But we did it all ourselves. The paving, retaining walls, lawn....(ok when I say we I mean my husband!). But the rest of us did what we could!

So although it may sound strange that we call our place a farm. It's our farm. It's our little piece of land. It may be small, but it serves us well!!

Four Chooks Farm!
